Max Schechter is a counsel in the Political Law practice group. He advises clients on a wide range of election law, ethics, and nonprofit tax compliance questions. Max’s clients include federal and state political committees and candidates, including candidates for governor and for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. He regularly helps organizations navigate the complex issues at the intersection of state and federal campaign finance law. Max has interacted with federal, state, and city regulators on behalf of his clients to develop creative solutions to novel questions. Max also has significant on-the-ground experience during recounts and election contests.

Max also advises tax-exempt organizations, including 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, 501(c)(4) social welfare organizations, and 501(c)(6) membership organizations, on governance and compliance with federal and state law. He has advised on numerous multistate advocacy and lobbying programs.

Max is a graduate of Columbia Law School and Cornell University. Before law school, Max worked on political campaigns in both field and research roles. He is based out of ELG’s office in Washington, D.C.
